Black Pearl of the Mediterranean
The town of Agde is set in the Golfe du Lion, at the mouth of the Hérault river. It is the last halt of the Canal du Midi, before it is thrown in the lake of Thau, near Sète. The black basalt buildings and the volcanic landscapes brought it the nickname « Black Pearl of the Mediterranean Sea ». The town’s history dates from the Greek era and the 6th century BC. The beach resort of Cap d’Agde was only built in the 1970s.
